Topic maps provide us with two different and important views into an information space:

a resource-centric view, one in which we use metadata to describe the resources we reference with topics

a subject-centric view, in which topic maps provide the tools necessary to represent, to “talk about” subjects.

These views, when coupled with the “topic map attitude” that topic maps, where possible, should be unified through merging, provide us with the opportunity for global knowledge interchange.

If you want to start creating your own topic maps it is recommended to download the Omnigator (Download) and write an XTM or LTM file. Then, the topic map can be browsed in the Omnigator immediately, without any programming or stylesheets.

Making a topic map

Create a topic map about XML, where it can be founded topics representing 'the XML Recommendation', 'the W3C', and 'Tim Bray'.

The types of the topics should be 'standard', 'standards body', and 'person'.

The relationship between the XML Recommendation and the W3C is called 'publishing', while the relationship between the Recommendation and Tim Bray is one of 'authorship'. So in the 'authorship' association Tim Bray plays the role of 'author' while the XML Recommendation plays the role of 'work'.

For "Tim Bray", occurrences should be his home page.

To create a topic map for the example above we can start by defining topics for the three topic types. This is done as follows:

How to Use Topic Maps

For creating a topic map there are three main approaches
- Have humans author the topic maps manually. This usually gives very high-quality and rich topic maps, but at the cost of human labor. This is appropriate for some projects, while prohibitively expensive for others.
- Automatically generate the topic map from existing source data. This can give very good results if the existing data are well-structured (sound familiar?); if not, there are various natural-language processing tools that might help.
- Automatically produce the topic map from structured source data like XML, RDBMSs, LDAP servers, and more specialized applications.

The <topic> Element

It specifies the name and occurrence characteristics of a single topic. It has a single unique identifier, and the ability to state the class(es) of which it is an instance and the identity of the subject that it reifies.

Every topic is intended to be organized around exactly one subject, even if that subject is only implicitly defined.

A topic map document may contain multiple topic elements that reify the same subject.

The class(es) of which the topic is an instance are indicated via the <instanceOf> child element(s).

General Information of Topic Maps

For programmers, many software libraries, called Topic Maps engines are available to use, some of which are part of complete knowledge management solutions.

Students and academics will find the Topic Maps Library useful. It includes many publications, a glossary, information about standards and more.

Many companies offer commercial services and/or consulting around Topic Maps products. The list of sponsors of TMRA is a good place to look for them. The Topic Maps Projects list gives some starting points, too.

The Standards are available through ISO. The latest versions can also be obtained at isotopicmaps.org. The most prominent standard is the Topic Maps Data Model which uses XTM 2 and CTM as serializations.

The purpose of a topic map is to convey knowledge about resources through a superimposed layer, or map, of the resources. A topic map captures the subjects of which resources speak, and the relationships between subjects, in a way that is implementation-independent.

A topic is a resource that acts as a proxy for some subject; it is the topic map system's representation of that subject.

The key concepts in topic maps are topics, associations, and occurrences.

An association is a relationship between one or more topics, each of which plays a role as a member of that association. The roles a topic plays in associations are among the characteristics that can be assigned to it and are therefore governed by scope. Each individual association is an instance of a single class of association (also known as an association type) that may or may not be indicated explicitly.

Topics can have names. They can also have occurrences, that is, information resources that are considered to be relevant in some way to their subject.

Topics can participate in relationships, called associations, in which they play roles as members.

Topics have three kinds of characteristics: names, occurrences, and roles played as members of associations.

History of Topic Maps

The work on topic maps began in 1991 when the Davenport Group was founded mainly by UNIX system vendors. The vendors were under customer pressure to improve consistency in their printed documentation. There was concern about the inconsistent use of terms in the documentation of systems and in published books on the same subjects.

System vendors wished to include O’Reilly’s independently created documentation on X-Windows, under license, seamlessly in their system manuals. One major problem was how to provide master indexes for independently maintained, constantly changing technical documentation aggregated into system manual sets by the vendors of such systems.

The first attempt at a solution to the problem was humorously called SOFABED (Standard Open Formal Architecture for Browsable Electronic Documents). The problem of providing living master indexes was so fascinating that, in 1993, a new group was created, the Conventions for the Application of HyTime (CApH) group, which would apply the sophisticated hypertext facilities of the ISO 10744 HyTime standard.

By 1995, the model was mature enough to be accepted by the ISO/JTC1/SC18/WG8 working group as a “new work item”—a basis for a new international standard. The topic maps

specification was ultimately published as ISO/IEC 13250:2000.

During the initial phase, the ISO/IEC 13250 model consisted of two constructs:

topics
relationships between topics (later to be called associations).

The notion of scope in topic maps is one of the key distinguishing features of the topic maps paradigm; scope makes it possible for topic maps to incorporate diverse world views, diverse languages and diversity in general, without loss of usefulness to specific users in specific contexts and with no danger of irreducible “infoglut.”

The scope and subject identity point aspects of the topic maps paradigm were first developed and articulated by Peter J. Newcomb and Victoria T. Newcomb during a 1997 breakfast conversation at the Whataburger restaurant in Plano, Texas.

The ISO 13250 standard was finalized in 1999 and published in January 2000. The syntax of ISO topic maps is at the same time very open and rigorously constrained, by virtue of the fact that the syntax is expressed as a set of architectural forms.

In the last years, the Topic Maps Data Model was developed and standardized by ISO in 2006, together with a XML-based serialization format, XTM 2. Later, the Compact Topic Maps Notation followed which is more suited for manual editing. Additionally, a query language and and a modeling language are currently in the progress of standardization.

Someone once said that “a book without an index is like a country without a map”. However interesting and worthwhile the experience of driving from A to B without a map might be in its own right, there can be no doubt that when the goal is to arrive at one's destination as quickly as possible (or at least without undue delay), some kind of a map is indispensable. Similarly, if you are looking for a particular piece of information in a book (as opposed to enjoying the experience of reading it from cover to cover), a good index is an immense asset.

What it is a topic? A topic, in its most generic sense, can be any “thing” whatsoever – a person, an entity, a concept, really anything – regardless of whether it exists or has any other specific characteristics, about which anything whatsoever may be asserted by any means

whatsoever.

Strictly speaking, the term “topic” refers to the element in the topic map document (the topic link) that represents the subject being referred to.

Topic Maps is an international industry standard (ISO 13250) for information management and interchange. Topic Maps is a Web 3.0 enabling technology. That means it works behind the scenes of many web portals and other rich data products.

The Topic Maps Data Model is the heart of the Topic Maps standards and is supported by several file formats, query languages and modeling languages.

A topic map in a software system is usually managed using a Topic Maps engine.
